Ultrasound Therapy

What is Ultrasound Therapy?

Most often people feel pain in their muscles or healing skeletal tissues because of inadequate blood supply. The reduced blood supply causes oxygen deficiency in the surrounding muscle to make it stiff and painful. Ultrasound therapy warms the offending muscles and restores blood supply for pain relief and quicker healing.

The procedure is used together with physical therapy to help people heal faster from their injuries or orthopedic conditions and is often used to relieve pain from osteoarthritis. During the procedure, your doctors will apply a gel to the painful region and use a handheld transducer to transmit sound waves into the body. These sound waves will warm the muscles and stimulate blood circulation to help reduce the discomfort in the painful area.

Some of the most common applications of ultrasound therapy include:

  • Tendonitis
  • Bursitis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Muscle spasms

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list of conditions that ultrasound therapy is useful for and you should consult our therapists to see if you can benefit from the condition. Ultrasound therapy is an outpatient procedure that doesn’t take more than a few minutes and you don’t have to stay overnight in the hospital at all.

It should be noted that ultrasound therapy does not heal any musculoskeletal condition on its own, but is often used as an aid to healing. For more information on ultrasound therapy or to book an appointment, speak with our consultants today.
